1. Gianluigi Buffon

The most expensive goalkeeper in the world and lived up to his lofty reputation when Italy won the World Cup in 2006. He was also awarded the Yashin Award after keeping five clean sheets in the tournament.

2. Gordon Banks

Won the World Cup with England in 1966. His most memorable save came four years later when he got down to claw out a header from Pele that seemed a certain goal.

3. Lev Yashin

Played in three World Cups for USSR, the 1958 World Cup was where he established himself as one fo the best goalies in the world. The best goalkeeper award at the World Cup (the Yashin Award) is named after him.

4. Sergio Goycochea

The Argentine goalkeeper, who was named the best goalie at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, was best known for his penalty saving ability but was a great all round keeper in his own right. What made his best keeper award in 1990 even more remarkable, he went to the tournament as the second choice goalkeeper and only played when the first choice got injured in the group stage!

5. Dino Zoff

Another great Italian goalkeeper, Zoff won the World Cup in 1982 and was regarded as one of the main reasons Italy were successful. Went on to manage his country.

6. Harald Schumacher

Schumacher was on the losing side in two World Cup Finals for West Germany but he is perhaps best known for his controversial 'collision' with French defender Patrick Battison in the 1982 World Cup which left the Frenchman in a coma

8. Michael Preud'homme

Not a house hold name but the Belgian shot stopper was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world during the late eighties and early nineties. He was the first Winner of the Yashin Award at the 1994 World Cup.

Not everyone's favourite keeper but there is no denying he had a great World Cup in 1998 when France were successful on home soil. His performance helped persuade Sir Alex Ferguson to bring him to Man Utd in the search for a successor to Peter Schmeichel.

10. Viliam Schrojf

Schrojf played in three World Cups for Czechoslavakia. He was largely responsible for their surprise appearance in the final in 1962 but it was Schrojf who was at fault in the final for two Brazilian goals.
