Six of the nineteen World Cup Winners were the host nation. That means a third of the host nations have won. A further two host nations were the losing finalists.
This bodes well for Brazil who will be hosting the 2014 World Cup. Brazil are also the side who has won most World Cups and are also normally favourite, or very close to favouritism in each World Cup, so they will be very well fancied at the World Cup 2014.
Possibly the most startling stat is the record of countries playing within their own continent. In fifteen of the nineteen World Cups that have been contested the winner has been playing in their home continent.
In three of the times the World Cup has been won by a team from outside of the host continent it has been won by Brazil. Spain were the other team to win the World Cup outside of their own continent in the mopst recent World Cup.
It is usually in the weaker continents where there is a foreign winner, all but one of the World Cups in Europe have been won by a European team, in all the World Cups in South America a South American team has won the World Cup.
Spain have dominated the world stage in recent years and are the only European team to have won a World Cup outside of Europe. They go into the 2014 World Cup as World Champions so command plenty of respect.
Germany also seem a team on the up, they were surprisingly good at the last World Cup and if they can find a great goalscorer in time for the 2014 World Cup they could be set for a very good tournament, as could Holland, who finished runners up in the 2010 World Cup.
England, France and Italy are usually well fancied at World Cups but all three sides have seen better years and unless they prove they are really top notch they could be best ignored for the time being.
